How Do Real Estate Agents Help You Like Educators?

Real estate agents help clients every day. Their education begins from the first meeting. When you think of me and my profession, you probably think of me as a real estate agent or a Realtor®, and you’d be right. However, I am also an avid learner and teacher, first and foremost.

I love to educate myself, learn, grow, and deepen my knowledge and skills. I don’t just concentrate on real estate but business as well. I believe it makes me a better professional and a better person. It is a joy I have cherished most of my adult life.

Walt Disney said it best:

“When you’re curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.”

It’s my curiosity that keeps me interested in learning. So much information is available to us now that I often find myself down a rabbit hole of research before realizing it. Usually, it’s on topics unrelated to real estate. Do you know what I’m talking about? I know you do.

One of the most essential parts of the learning process is teaching others. This is how we master our craft and become better first. We must learn, then we must do it or practice it, and then we must teach it to others. It’s also known as learn, do, teach. The teaching step is how we deepen the learning and master the subject matter.

So why am I saying all this? Because teaching is one of the most enjoyable aspects of my work. More importantly, it is a true joy in my life—it has always been and always will be. I love that I get to study, learn, and absorb information about the local, state, and national real estate business markets and then pass that knowledge on to my clients, referral partners, and the public through my digital platforms and networking.

I am a veritable Encyclopedia of local and state real estate information and Market statistics. Blessedly, I have had the good fortune of having outstanding teachers and mentors.

These are some of the skills that make a good teacher. They also apply to real estate agents.

Creativity – the ability to make things exciting and understandable.

Leadership – guiding someone through a process.

Collaboration – great at working with others.

Adaptability – being able to react quickly and handle any situation.

Time management – propensity to use every minute practically.

Real estate agents must be able to confidently educate home buyers and sellers on the market and the process. With the plethora of data available on the internet, many people think they know a thing or two about real estate.  Well, that may be the case. They do have the information, but do they understand what it means, how it affects real estate or their transaction? Buying and selling real estate is not something you do every day like I do. The statutory forms and disclosures alone can be overwhelming.

The method of selling and buying a home is a unique consumer experience. Let me say every transaction is different. After 22 years in this business, I can confidently say every transaction is different.

There is so much to learn in this ever-changing industry. Some of the things I’ve learned in real estate:

  1. Like any entrepreneur, I have had to learn how to manage my time, set up systems, and keep detailed records to be a business owner.
  2. Creating and maintaining relationships. Real estate is a relationship business. People want to work with agents they know, like, and trust.
  3. Learn the local market. I must know about the communities I serve.

Exploring these three areas, in addition to the market, leads me to some great experiences that I can share with others.

Continually learning is vital to everything I do in my business because knowledge is a powerful aspect of communicating and negotiating. I strive to bring understanding and value to my clients in every transaction. I also help my friends and family understand as I continue to learn, comprehend, and evolve.
