Taking the (K)nots Out of Real Estate

Having A Great Time. Wish You Were Here!

Summer is a great time to hang out in the desert. Just like the plants in my garden, we may move a little slower, but we still have plenty of moves to show off. With climate change, so many cities across the country are experiencing record heat levels - levels that our local areas are used to and completely prepared for. 115 degrees? No problem. It’s a dry heat. We’re a desert paradise 365 days a year. In the desert, we take these kinds of temperatures for granted and have fully adapted to them with pools, plenty of air conditioning, and lots to do. We just do most of it in the mornings when it’s cooler. Looking to get your zen on in the morning, but tired of spending hours on zoom and YouTube? Did you know there’s free yoga by Power Yoga at the new Agua Caliente Casino in Cathedral City on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.? Now you do.

Nothing says summer fun like a milkshake or smoothie. Great Shakes in downtown Palm Springs has it all - the cool P.S. vibe, shakes in great flavors like Almond Joy and Banana Caramel Graham, fruit infusions, and a mini-donut to top off each shake. Then, of course, there’s Fruit Wonders with fresh organic juices, acai bowls, smoothies, Frescas, and paletas.

Most of all, there’s plenty of happiness to be found in and around the desert at large. In this newsletter, you’ll find no end of great ideas for places to go and things to do - we even have a bucket list you can download to guarantee that you have the Best Summer Ever!

Stephen's Garden | July 2021

One of the best things about July is seeing the early fruit on our trees. In just a few short months, my “squee!” of joy at seeing the tiny green fruit will turn into the squeeze of fresh juice on my breakfast table. We’re still close to the longest day of the Summer Solstice, so we have to keep careful watch over our garden plants to keep things from getting burned by the summer sun and making sure they have lots and lots of water. Typically, we’ll choose this time to take a break in pruning and clearing, leaving the dead stuff to help shield the living foliage underneath. We go a step farther for our more delicate plants, putting up temporary shades and covers. The plants may grow slow, but they grow. Give them plenty of water and they won't burn or dry out. Watermelons and zucchini do great in the heat. Overall, it’s amazing what survives - and even thrives.

Always fun and entertaining, the Gay Desert Guide Calendar of Events lists out all of the hottest “To Do’s” around with plenty of in-person and virtual options to suit you. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Did you know that Palm Springs hosts the world’s largest rotating tram? Located a mere 8,516 feet above the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a great getaway for you and your friends or family while the valley experiences a “balmy” 119º heatwave! Escape to the mountainous top of the tram and enjoy temperatures that are regularly 30º cooler than the valley. While you are visiting the top of the tram, take advantage of a leisurely hike, enjoy a yoga class with a view, or watch one of the two documentary films shown daily. There are two restaurants (with a view of course!) and if you want to try an overnight stay, you can book one of the spots and go camping.

Children’s Discovery Museum

I think we all feel like Phoenixes rising from the ashes of lockdown, but no organization represents that more than the Children’s Discovery Museum in Rancho Mirage. They survived the long months of closure and are fully re-imagining themselves, complete with new exhibits, new services, building expansion, and new construction, with an anticipated re-opening in late 2022. A large-scale campaign is launching to engage donors, corporate partners, sponsors, and the community at large. Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert has been an institution in the valley for three decades. Reopening CDMoD will take long-term planning and commitment from its board of directors and the greater Coachella Valley community. If you would like to be a part of the reopening of the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert and for media inquiries please contact Cindy Burreson at exec@cdmod.org or visit www.CDMoD.org With this expansion to include live events and older kids, the Children's Discovery Museum is especially grateful for your donations.
